Preparing for a Week of Homeschooling

What helps you prepare for a new week of school with your children? Do you need to write out everything you do during the school week? Or do you have general themes and you pull together materials each day based on the flow of the day? I rarely follow a “perfect” plan that I prepare in advance. It’s good to be flexible, but I appreciate having a general plan to make sure I don’t stray too far from our educational goals. We took last week off for Thanksgiving, and now we have three weeks ahead of us before Advent/Christmas break. Since I don’t want to be doing school on Christmas Eve, I am hoping to stay on track with a plan.

Here is what helps our family stay on top of our schoolwork on Sunday night:

  • Print checklist of topics to cover each day for each child
  • Make sure their pencil cases are ready to go (e.g., sharpened pencils, eraser, scissors, etc.)
  • Clean school room table
  • Clean living room (to be ready for BJU math lessons)
  • Prepare bins for the children; make sure all workbooks, books, etc. are there
  • Plug in iPad and iPhone to play memory work or have the children use apps (e.g., math facts, ABCs, etc.)

It also really helps me if I do my meal planning in advance, or at least try to complete it during the day. When I am prepared on Sunday for the school week, it goes well. When I am not prepared, it depends how well we cleaned up on Fridays. If we put all of their school books where they belong on Friday (in their school bin), then it’s easy to pull it out on Monday morning and start lessons.

Here is a sample of what my 3rd grade daughter will do this week:

This is also the first week of Advent. We will add into our plan that we will watch Holy Heroes each day, light our Advent candles at dinner, and read scripture passages to go along with our Jesse tree.

With whatever your plans are for this week, whether it’s structured or not, I hope you have a wonderful week!
